Auditory and Visual Comparison Analysis

Directions/ Essay Purpose: In this (250-300 word) analysis of The Hate U Give you must use your “Auditory and Visual Notes-Literature” handout and your “Auditory and Visual Notes-Film” handout to compare and contrast how each medium (the book) and (the movie), via sound and sight, create memorable/ enduring works of art.
Submission Guidelines/Due Date: To be typed (Times New Roman, 12-point font), printed, and turned in by the start of class, on Tuesday, September 24, 2019. *Note: You will also turn in all note sheets/bookmarks on Tuesday. *This assignment is worth a total of six points: (3 points for the analysis and 3 points for your notes).
About the Essay’s Structure:
Compare: Find auditory/visual similarities between the book and the film and attempt to explain how they add to (or detract from) the book’s or film’s success
Contrast: Find auditory/visual differences between the book and the film and attempt to explain how they add to ((or detract from) the book’s or film’s success
Paragraphs (i.e. introduction; multiple body paragraphs, and a conclusion)
Introduction: Provide summary and present a thesis
One or two body paragraphs should capture the auditory (literature and film) similarities
One or two body paragraphs should capture the visual (literature and film) similarities
Conclusion: Emphasize one or two of your previously mentioned main points and leaves the reader understanding your essay’s overall purpose
*Note: Your essay should be written in third-person. In other words, write as objectively as you can.
Analysis Do’s:
• Use your critical ears and eyes/ Infer meaning
• Create a thesis with a single main point or multiple main points
• Ask yourself inquiry questions: How do I know these ideas are similar or different; why are these similarities/differences necessary to the book’s/film’s success (or lack thereof)
• Quote, Paraphrase, Summarize: Reference the book and movie very specifically. In other words, quote the book and quote the movie. You can quote the film by simply mentioning the specific scene, etc. Quote the book by inserting page numbers, etc.
• Explain your ideas succinctly and effectively
Analysis Don’ts:
• Don’t simply summarize the book and film (throughout your analysis/essay)
• Don’t over repeat yourself
• Don’t procrastinate
• Don’t turn in incomplete work
You will be graded on:
• Whether your work is turned in on time
• Whether your work is complete
• Your ability to make me see that you have been engaged with the book and the film
• Your ability to interpret and capture meaning, by explaining
• Your ability to adhere to basic grammatical and mechanical structures
*Note: This analysis is not being graded on how well you write a traditional compare/contrast essay. You will be graded on your depth of thought; your wiliness to interpret, and your desire to effectively articulate ideas
