Xiaomi Corporation has grown from its humble beginnings as a smartphone manufacturer in 2010 to become a top-class technology company the global Internet of Things (IoT) powerhouse. The company has been developing its IoT business segment since 2013 by investing in IoT device start-ups to avoid over-relying on the smartphone and hardware business, which has become increasingly saturated. Xiaomi Corporation is intent on creating new business opportunities and revenue streams in the face of the looming Internet of Everything (IoE) and 5G era (Paul). The company recently unveiled an IoT ecosystem that entails all key categories including personal, family, office, and travel. This smart living concept includes a slew of new smart home appliances such as smart televisions, Wi-Fi router, camera ISPs, smart speakers, sensors, laptop, and smart watches.
Given Xiaomi Corporation’s recent successes in building a world-leading IoT platform that allows users to connect various consumer electronic products with their smartphones to make life easier, the company should showcase its new AIoT platform that combine artificial intelligence with internet of things at the next IoT Expo World Series. While not a product in its own right, Xiaomi’s CyberDog is a product of AIoT and will help to illustrate the potentials of Xiaomi’s AIoT and why the company is pursuing edge computing in addition to bolstering its smart home system. CyberDog is capable of scrutinizing its surrounding in real-time, creating navigational maps, developing pathways, and avoiding obstacles (Vincent). The contraption is capable of facial recognition tracking and obeying voice commands. It can not only follow its owner while avoiding obstacles but also respond to instructions without any control. Equipped with an array of sensors and cameras, and GPS module, the robot is capable of thinking and navigating autonomously as well as performing nimble backflips and trotting. Its pet-like nature points to a smart machine capable of thought. This facility can be applied to industrial settings where smart machines capable of intelligent computing and communication technology can run by themselves with little service maintenance. Machine learning powered by AIoT has the power to drive Xiaomi’s efforts at creating efficient machines with reactive control systems that optimize performance.
