The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) holds significant responsibilities in fighting against international crime, human, and drug trafficking. UNODC was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Vienna, Italy, with 20 field offices. In particular, it educates individuals around the world about the dangers of abusing drugs, human trafficking, and other crimes that are related to drugs. UNODC has introduced various initiatives to foster individuals’ safety globally and prevent crime, such as money laundering. For this reason, the implementation of a global database on people trafficking reports, investigations, arrestee data, known techniques of operation, and patterns of illegal activities would be beneficial to combat international crime.
One of the primary reasons why UNODC was established is to curb human and firearm trafficking and the smuggling of immigrants. As such, the introduction of a worldwide database would be a crucial step in eradicating crime. Indeed, countering global illegal activities requires good record-keeping since it involves wealthy cartels who can do everything to breach system security. For instance, human or drug traffickers are well-connected with politicians, which makes it difficult to weed them out. However, with database recording movements and activities of these criminals, it would become easy to know those who are behind these heinous acts and apprehend them. Some of the tactics used by human and drug traffickers are repeated several times (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2016). Consequently, an international database would make it possible for law enforcers to master the crime patterns and wait for the right moment to arrest the culprits.
The main objective of the UNODC international database is to record relevant data that would help law enforcers to eradicate crimes, such as drug and human trafficking.
