Proper nutrition plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Nutrients provide the human body with energy as well as elements vital in growth, repair, and the regulation of body processes. They include proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, water and fats. Regular physical activity and healthy eating patterns help people sustain healthy weight, uphold health and minimize the risk to chronic disease.
Unhealthy eating habits has been a global health threat. In the United States, for example, over 33.8% of adults and nearly 17% of children and teens are obese. Similarly, poor diets intakes have contributed to the rising cases of heart diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and osteoporosis, to mention a few (Rehkamp et al, 8). It is even depressing these diseases are now common among young people. As such, introducing smart food choices in childhood can assist people in carrying the habits into adulthoods, thus helping them remain healthy throughout their life (Cook et al., 27).
Healthy diets comprise of: vegetables such as legumes; fruits mostly whole fruits; grains with at least 50% being whole grains; and fat-free or low-fat dairy-like cheese, yoghurt, soy beverages and milk. Also, the diet should include protein like white meats, eggs, seafood, soy products and nuts (Cook et al., 22). Sustainable eating pattern restricts use of high levels of oil and saturated fats and Tran’s fats added sugars and sodium. An individual should consume less than 10% of calories per day from saturated fats and added sugars. Further, sodium should not be consumed more than 2300 milligrams per day (Rehkamp et al., 5).
