Environmental justice is the treatment of all persons fairly irrespective of their race, nationality, or income. It ensures the health safety of an individual regardless of the environment. The term came up after an increase in power plants and industries that polluted the environment in areas populated by minority groups (Kronk, 2016). Minority groups experienced most of the environmental burdens that compromised the health of people like inadequate access to healthy food, air, and water pollution. This paper distinguishes climate justice from environmental justice and discusses the role played by environmental policy and activism in environmental and climate justice.
The environmental justice movement has a major influence on the conceptualization of climate justice. Climate justice looks at the role of the community and the disparities existing in the community while demanding community sovereignty. According to Thomas (2020), climate justice addresses the social and economic conditions facing climate change and provides solutions to marginalized communities. People of color and low-income communities in the United States and other parts of the world are greatly impacted by environmental injustice (Thomas, 2020). The Environmental and Climate Justice Program was founded to help marginalized or low-income communities that are often most hit by climate change (Thomas, 2020). The program looks into the practices that pose a threat to communities and comes up with mitigation policies.
Environmental policy controls the factors affecting the operation of the environment. The environmental justice laws find ways in which cities could institutionalize their commitment to environmental justice through various functions (Thomas, 2020). The SF EJ Program in San Fransisco funds local community projects and tackles the problem of health disparities (Thomas, 2020). The program also finds ways of improving the quality of air and renewing energy.
