Microbial communities play a crucial role in the soil. One of their major roles is that they aid in decomposition of organic matter. However, the amount of microbial communities depends on the nature of vegetation; panted or natural vegetation. Natural vegetation contains a higher amount of microbial communities than planted vegetation. This is because planted vegetation has been polluted by such human activities as using pesticides, insecticides, and excess fertilizers. These make the environment unsuitable for the survival of the microbial communities. Notably, human activities have increased in different parts of the world in farms, and this has greatly reduced the amount of microbial communities. However, the effect can be reversed by supporting natural vegetation since it can increase the number of microbial communities.
Cover crops can be planted to help in increasing soil microbial diversity and amounts, as well as mitigating decrease in perennial farming. Commercial perennial farming often declines as a result of adverse plant-soil feedback. An alternative way to avoid expensive and environmentally harmful treatment like soil fumigation is manipulating the diversity of microbial communities by carefully selecting and managing cover crop mixtures (Deng et al. 43). Such cover crops help in increasing the amount of microbial communities since they significantly influence soil biota. Further, increasing the diversity of plants in the ecology helps in increasing the amount of microbial community and microbial diversity, thus improving proliferation of pathogens. Further, the amount of useful microbial communities in the soil can be increased by increasing the richness of plant functional groups such as grasses, legumes, and non-legumes. For instance, brassicas support growth of microbial communities by suppressing fungal pathogens. Therefore, careful management of natural vegetation can help in increasing microbial communities’ population.
Microbial population is seriously threatened by grassland desertification. As a result, researchers have shifted their attention to the management of grassland desertification and how lost grassland can be restored and reconstructed. Restoration of natural vegetation is an effective solution, and it helps in managing the soil (Chang et al. 33). Soil plays a crucial role as it sustains diversity of microbial communities, and the characteristics of microbial communities in soil are sensitive indicators of soul. Soil microbial is the primary index in evaluating the quality of soil, and is thus important in promoting the diversity of microbial communities and the ecosystem. As such, natural vegetation helps in persevering microbial communities, and microbial communities are used to evaluate the quality of soil.
Different vegetation affects the amount of microbial communities in the soil in different ways. This approach has also been used by researchers to get scientific bases as well as technical support for impersonal and systematic assessment of the most appropriate vegetation that can be used for restoration (Wan and Ruirui 20).
