The prevalence of obesity and overweight has risen in recent years and now threatens to become a global epidemic. A substantial proportion of the population is said to be at the risk of mortality and morbidity because of increased body weight. In developed countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and China, people have reportedly increased their dependence on unhealthy foods, especially the ones that contain sugar or carbohydrates. Today, obesity has become the biggest and most prominent nutrition-related problem all over the world, and health experts indicate that dietary sources of carbohydrates contribute to this problem to an extent. Carbohydrates account for more than 60 percent of the calories in an average diet. Almost all sources of carbohydrates, such as grain products, starchy beans, and vegetables, fruits, beverages, added sugar and sweets are considered a contributing factor.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, all of the dietary carbohydrates come from animals and plants. Grain products are nutritive carbohydrates; it means they are naturally broken down and then utilized by the human body to produce a lot of energy. Most of the calories released by these grain products are indigestible. Grains contain a high concentration of starch, which disturbs the gastrointestinal system along with the blood circulatory system, making it impossible for the body to perform most of its functions. Wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, millet, quinoa, sorghum, bulgur, grano, farro, and barley are the natural sources of carbohydrates that cause obesit...
