Analysis of Jules Briton’s Artwork of The Weeders
Jules Breton is one of the greatest artists who was introduced to drawing when he was at a college in Douai. Most of his paintings are influenced by the French countryside and his paintings illustrate the life that the French people were leading in the countryside. Most of his artwork focuses on the life of the peasant class and one of his arts is called The Weeders. The art is one of Breton’s greatest works and it explains the way of life of the farmers in the rural areas in Northern French. He painted the painting after observing a group of peasant women working on a farm in his home in Courrieres. They were clearing away weeds from a piece of land. The artwork portrays different meanings about the social-cultural way of life of the community in the artwork. It also communicates the farming practices that were carried out by the peasant farmers who were the lowest class in France.
One of the notable features of the art is the sun that is setting in the far horizon. Breton has used an orange color to show the sun that is setting in the far horizon. The orange color of the sun blends well with the surrounding green environment that gives the impression of a farm that contains crops that are in the early stages of growth and gives the impression of the richness of the field. The women are also laboring as they get rid of weeds from the crops so that they can grow. All the women in the art are on their knees except one who is standing behind with a sack that contains the weeds that they have gotten rid of from the farm. There are also other two women in the far horizon who can be seen also weeding. The women are also dressed in their traditional French clothes and each of the women in the pictures has covered their heads to demonstrate the culture of the community in the group. There is also a crescent moon that is observed in the sky. The artwork looks great given that it was done on an oil canvas and the contrast that is created by the use of the different colors plays a great role in speaking on the time and the meaning ...
