Shane Sparks Choreography
Shane Sparks is a famous American hip-hop choreographer. His suave attitude and deep passion for dance have attracted admiration from a large portion of the American audience (Biography). Born in 1969 in Ohio, U.S.A., Sparks developed a deep interest in dance at the early age of eleven years. In 1993, he relocated from his hometown to Los Angeles where his dance career took off (Macel, 28). Sparks made a name for himself through many hip-hop mainstream dance projects, including the “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “America’s Best Dance Crew” among other dance reality shows.
Sparks has established dance styles that increase the exposure of the mainstream Hip-Hop dance culture. During his growth as a choreographer, Hip-Hop was all about changing people's perceptions of the normal dance genres. The Hip-Hop society embraced a multicultural dance context inspired by tribal dances gymnastics, Kung-Fu, etc. (Freire, 322). The exotic Hip-Hop society created a fusion of art that popularized commercial-based modern Hip-Hop dance genres. An example is the MTV’s reality dancing competition show, “America’s Best Dance Crew,” where the role of Sparks as a judge made him a force to be reckoned with.
Sparks is a compact dancing powerhouse whose success came in a short period. His street dance styles involved powerful and complex moves that are incorporated in breakdancing (SSA Crew). During his stay in Los Angeles, he engaged in street dance battles and contributed to the transition of breakdance moves. He introduced new popping and locking moves that transitioned between old and new Hip-Hop music (Los Angeles Times). His engagement with competition crews and reality revealed his ability to challenge himself and execute dance moves perfectly.
