Director Lixin Fan's film Last Train Home is an impeccable documentary about modern-day China. It focuses on Chinese migration laborers from the rural areas to the commercial cities. Such is done by reflecting on a single family. The title of the movie refers to the largest annual migration in the world. It refers to a ritual Chinese workers take as they travel to celebrate the new year with their loved ones. The movie is a perfect reflection of modern-day China, where people have to grab every opportunity they come across to provide for their families. The people are all caught in the same fears in a country characterized by commercialization and globalization.
The people depicted in the movie are from villages characterized by poverty. Their options are staying in the village to starve or leaving for the cities to make a living and feed the people in the village. They have decided to leave for the commercial cities to make a living (Wang). Such can be reflected in modern-day China, where most income-generating activities are in the cities. The rural areas are less developed and rarely provide people with opportunities to earn a living.
