Self-Portrait Without Beard is an oil canvas that was painted in 1889. The artist, Vincent Van Gogh, had numerous experiences that could have inspired this art. It is one of the most expensive paintings of all time and was sold for 71 million USD in 1998. While developing as an artist, Vincent Van Gogh created numerous self-portraits. The paints do not only record his transformation as an artist but also showcase the psychological decline and unconsciousness that he underwent. He is believed to have painted more than thirty self-portraits during the last thirty years of his life. In this portrait, we can see the various elements that would be seen in the later works. The works reflect the state of his emotions as well as a style of art that connects with the consciousness. The artist was still dealing with the various issues affecting him after leaving the asylum in 1889.
Based on the Freudian perspective, we can say that the painting was a depiction of the real Vincent Van Gogh. The invisible aspects of the person are what affect and influence their actions most. The unconscious mind of the artist acted as a repository of whom he was, especially after undergoing the experiences in the asylum. Based on the arguments posed by Freudian analysis, the unconscious mind governs the behavior of the people.
