Hello! I am very excited to introduce you to two absolutely unique artists/photographers. ​

Vivian Maier and ​Richard Learoyd​ are not your typical photographers. In the videos you will learn more about the person behind the camera, but in your paper, I want you to focus on comparing and contrasting the two photographs​ themselves - information the videos will not give you, you will need to discover for yourself. Take time to really study these two images, list the similarities, the differences, use vocabulary we learned in class about light. Your paper should describe the works of art, through ​compare ​ and ​contrast​.  
Please utilize this Presentation on how to write an art history compare and contrast paper: Compare and Contrast Instructions and Rubric ​- Read this first View the Photographs, Watch​ the videos, take ​notes​, then ​respond​ in your own words. 
Create an outline for your notes, and form your own thoughts. I will take off points if you provide information from wikipedia or other information that was not provided here in the video. Please do more than recite facts about these artists, but think critically about what you ​observe​ in the photos they create, and choose your vocabulary words wisely as you compare and contrast their work.  1. Watch these videos about the ​artists​ behind the artworks that use hard and soft light.  - Vivian Maier​ This news report discusses the life and work of Vivan Maier, as well as the documentary about how she was discovered! She is a master photographer with a crazy story - we watch the full documentary in Honors Photography II, you can also buy it on Amazon Prime. - Richard Learoyd​ is a photographer that your book mentions in the section on soft light. What the book didn’t tell you was that he uses a Camera Obscura to record these amazing soft light, larger than life images. ​ (sorry about the censored images and low quality recording due to this, but I didn’t want you to miss out on his work because of two sensitive images) 2. Open a New Google Doc, title it - ​Last Name _ Gold Online Day #2 - set sharing settings to anyone can view.  ​Please use MLA formatting for this paper. It should be 1-2 pages long, double spaced. Submit to Canvas as a link.

I am going to analyze Vivian Mair’s Self Portrait and Richard Learoyd’s Jasmijn towards the Light. Vivian was a US-based street photographer and, Richard is a contemporary photographer and artist from Britain.
Vivian Mair long remained unknown to the world, and as a street photographer, her work could not gain any popularity. However, most recently, her portrait was brought to media’s attention and the exhibitions were held in London and New York like big cities to let the world know about her marvelous works.
When Richard Learoyd created this work, he had the idea of collective photographic memory in his mind.
