To many, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is just the steps ran up by Sylvester Stallone in the popular 1976 flick Rocky. But beyond this, this museum is among the country’s finest treasure troves, starring superb collections of Renaissance masterpieces, post-Impressionist works, Asian art, and contemporary pieces. So much is to be seen that the museum offers admission for two days. The Museum majestically stands on a rise towards the end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The extensive collections in this museum make it one of the biggest art museums located in the country and a definite must-see on the city’s cultural circuit. Founded in 1876 during the country’s first centennial, as a museum of arts, the museum soon outgrew its domicile in Fairmont Park’s Memorial Hall. Currently, its building which is the form of three chained Greek temples was made accessible to the populace in 1928.
The city’s prime cultural attraction is one of the country’s leading museums. Among the greatest treasures possessed by the museum is the building itself. Constructed in 1928 using Minnesota Dolomite, Philadelphia Museum of Art is modeled after ancient Greek temples but on a grander scale. The first African-American to graduate from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Architecture - Julian Francis Abele, designed the museum. The museum can be accessed from the front or the rear; access it from the front and you can run or walk up the ninety-nine steps famously portrayed in the movie Rocky.
Upon entry, you will see the grand staircase along with Diana, (Saint-Gaudens’s statue). The museum boasts of several fine permanent collections: the A.E Gallatin and Arensberg collection contains contemporary and modern works by artists such as Matisse, Brancusi, Picasso, and Braque. Well-known paintings in these collections include Picasso’s Three Musicians, Reuben’s Prometheus Bound, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Cézanne's The Large Bathers, and Benjamin West’s Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the sky. Philadelphia Museum of Art has the universe’s most expensive collection of works created by Marcel Duchamp, including the iconic The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even, alternatively known as (The Large Glass) displayed precisely how it was installed by the dada master and Nude Descending a Staircase.
