Food in Film: East Side Sushi

Essay Instructions:

you should not need to do outside research for the reflections and instead should focus on demonstrating your comprehension of the assigned readings themselves in relation to the specific questions posed. If the writer is working with additional sources, all direct quotations, paraphrases, and summaries are fully integrated and cross-referenced

We often hear people proclaim that a particular restaurant is worthy of patronage because it offers authentic food from a specific usually ethnic cuisine.

Likewise, East Side Sushi is often praised as a film that provides an authentic albeit fictional depiction of the protagonist's quest for a life that allows her to be her best self.  In this week's reflection, consider the problematic the concept of authenticity creates in both our feature film and the two poems by Langston Hughes. For example, you might find it interesting to examine stereotypes of authenticity and the stereotypes that can easily be created when tradition is challenged.

A well-developed unified reflection will be between 1.5 (three paragraphs) to 3 pages (six paragraphs) in length (double spaced), engage critically in the ideas and concepts presented, and have a clear three-part structure (introduction, supporting paragraph(s), conclusion. Assume readers are familiar with the plots and keep summaries to a minimum.

Please be aware that early in the film, one of the scenes depicts a violent assault. The violence of the scene is not gratuitous but an important element of the plot. If you are uncomfortable when screening the scene, I recommend that you fast-forward to the next scene.

I believe the concept of authenticity created specific problems in the film. For one, the authenticity concept made it difficult for the restaurant owner to allow Juana to work as a chef in the Japanese restaurant. As seen from the film, it is evident that Juana had excellent skills in sushi, but simply because she ...
