This picture was painted for Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini after the artist had arrived in Rome in 1595. In the artwork, Annibale brings together two different painting styles in Italy: sensitivity to the impacts of color and natural light where were popular in north Italy, and the idealized figures and spatial organization that were associated with Raphael. The design of the figure in terms of the use of lines, light, times, naturalism, and color rhyme with the features of the Baroque period.

The figure was produced at a time when the Catholic Church encouraged artists to exhibit stronger religious features in their artworks and paintings. Owing to the fact that this was a painting of God together with several people in the room, the picture meets the request from the Catholic Church to ensue that paintings conveyed a stronger religious message to the audience.
