Dolly Rebecca Parton, also known as Dolly Parton, was an American country music singer born on January 19, 1946, in Tennessee, United States. Apart from singing, she is also an actress, philanthropist, and guitarist known for pioneering the interconnection between pop music styles and country music. Dolly Parton started to write her songs at the age of five. She states, “When I was a little girl, I used a tobacco stick and a tin can and pretended it was a microphone, and I sang on my front porch, imagining I was on the Grand Ole Opry”(Lynskey np). Her contributions to music and the United States culture have earned her countless recognition from organizations beyond the art industry. In 2004, the Library of Congress named the singer 'a Living Legend' for her dedication to the country's heritage and culture. In 2005 Parton was awarded the U.S. government’s National Medal of Arts, and later in 2006, she emerged a winner at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. She is internationally recognized for her lifetime artistic achievement and became famous for her excellent music, acting skills, dedication to literacy, and social well-being.
Parton's music career is quite an inspiration to many artists. For all of her amazing feats and accomplishments outside of music and film, Dolly Parton is, first and foremost, a singer of exceptional caliber. This is what initially brought her to fame. She defied all odds to become one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time. Parton grew up in a poor village in Pittman Center, Tennessee (Parton 42). Despite the poverty, the singer described the Parton family as happy and rich in many other ways. Dolly started singing in church at age six and began playing the guitar a year later. She has composed nearly 5,000 songs, received over 200 international awards, and sold over 100 million records worldwide. I believe Dolly is truly the definition of music to our ears.
Despite her exceptional singing, Dolly is also a fantastic actress. For instance, she has been awarded roles in movies such as 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias, Rhinestone, A Smoky Mountain Christmas, and Gnomeo and Juliet, among others. The secret to the singer's success as an actress is quite simple; she only accepts roles she feels she can accurately portray. For instance, in her debut role in the 1980's film 9 to 5, she knew that the chosen character would have much of her personality. She said in an interview, "When I read that part for 9 to 5, you know, it was a girl from Texas, and she was so much like me anyway, so that was not that far-fetched." This was her first time in a film, and she already knew what she was supposed to do. As a result, her dedication and commitment made the movie a success, paving the way for more successful and rewarding film projects.
The singer was deeply dedicated to literacy and social well-being. In 1988, Dolly founded the Dollywood Foundation, an education organization to decrease the Tennessee high school dropout rates.
