This is a music engineering topic assignment:
Choose one producer or engineer from the book “Behind the Glass” (Howard Massey), or any professional producer or engineer that you are a fan of. Do a Google search on the person you have chosen and the artists they have worked with. Find at least 5 records they have made from different artists, and listen to them. Take notes.
In four weeks, turn in a discography of those 5 records, with a short explanation of what you learned from listening to each of the 5 records, and an analysis of the producer or engineer’s approach to record-making.
Must be typed in 12 point font, single-spaced. One page only!
Note: The choice of producer or engineer is yours, but try to avoid: 1) Artists that produce their own records 2) Artists that have worked on a few other artist’s records 3) Re-mixers, etc. 4) International producers whose work is not easily found on YouTube, Spotify, etc.
Avoid papers about Rick Rubin, try looking for professional producers and engineers with sizable discographies.

Karl Martin Sandberg, popularly known as Max Martin, is a Swedish producer and songwriter credited with producing hit records since the early 90s. The producer has worked with some of the most celebrated musicians in the industry: the Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion, NSYNC, Ace of Base, Britney spears, Kelly Clarkson, and Avril Lavigne and Adele, among others. These artists have been selected particularly for this assignment since their singles have attained the top positions in the Billboard Hot 100 chart (Gang and Kaneshiro) based on sales, radio play, and online streaming. The five records included in the discography include “oops I did it again” (Britney Spears), “shape of my heart (Backstreet Boys), “It’s gonna be me” (NSYNC), “since u been gone” (Kelly Clarkson), and “that’s the way it is” (Celine Dion).
The first record, “oops, I did it again,” is quite a complex production in terms of chord and melodic complexity more than the typical song. Despite being categorized as popular music, it is written in the key of C♯ minor, which is a common choice for similar music (Gang and Kaneshiro). The song has a moderate tempo that does not exceed a hundred beats per minute which is the standard for most pop music produced in the late 90s and early 2000s. Backstreet Boys’ shape of my heart, which is the lead single in their fourth album, has all the mandatory elements common for popular music during this era, including simple chords and harmonious choruses.
