Movie Review: Same Kind of Different as Me
I watched the film Same Kind of Different as Me for this assignment. It is an American Christian Drama movie that Pure Flix Entertainment produced in 2017. Ron Hall, Alexander Foard, and Michael Carney wrote it, and Michael Carney also directed it. The movie is based on slavery, friendship, homelessness, racism, Christian faith, reconciliation, love, ego, and charity, which make up the film's major themes.
The primary theme in the movie is love, ego, and charity. Debra forgives her husband, Ron, when she catches him cheating. Instead, she asks him to join a charity organization inspired by the Christian faith. Ron overcomes his ego through expanding love and treating the less fortunate as equals as he helps the homeless members of society (Allen). The movie uses Ron to show how ego can get in the way of a person trying to be compassionate. Ron treats people as lesser humans because they are not privileged with wealth (Same Kind of Different as Me).
In contrast, Debra finds joy in helping the homeless because it is the right thing to do as a Christian. Ron soon realizes that the ego is not good and treats the homeless as equal to him. This change shows how people should set aside their ego and superiority beliefs to truly serve the people in need (Hall & Moore). Love becomes evident when Ron and Debra begin hosting movie nights and birthday celebrations. This step enriched love among the street families, making them feel loved and forgetting their challenges for a while.
