Fase: Four Movements to the music of Steve Reich
This dance was performed in New York Live Arts Theater from September 24th to 28th 2019. As the title indicates, the presentation is made up of four pieces each with different sets of choreography and music. The music is by Steve Reich and the style is largely created by repeating routines that go in and out of sync. The choreographer is Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker who has created several choreographies for decades. One of her famous works is the Rosas danst Rosas. The performance is done by three duets and solo. In each of the phases, the choreographers execute simple routines over and over and though they go in and out of sync, the movement seems impeccably choreographed to align later in time. Each of the pieces has its style, smoothness, pace, low, etc. The costumes are also complimentary to each piece. For the slow graceful pieces, the dancers wear swirly dresses and for the quicker and harder routines they wear pants. For the first, second and fourth pieces the dancers are two while the third piece is just one performer. Lighting is also an important part of the performance especially the first phase. The first phase features a lighting method positioned in such a way that the two main sources of light cast two pale shadows to the wall. For each performer, one of their shadows overlaps with that of their partner to give a darker shadow of both of them. The darker shadow appears as if there are 3 performers on the stage.
The use of movement by the choreographer is mixed. For the first phase which is led by a piano instrumental, the duet uses a lot of space as they move about the stage. Their movements are rhythmic, slow, graceful and soft but they cover more space on the stage. The choreography largely involves spinning with each of their right hands fully stretched out and once in a while they move across the stage. The dresses flatter their spinning forming an umbrella-like shape. Though their movements are very repetitive, they tend to take a lot of space. In the second piece, the performers use relatively less space.
Compared to the first phase, the second duet is more energetic and mostly they move their upper body. They are seated and seem restricted to the chair and most of their movement is by hands. They keep spinning on their stools in a clockwise direction throughout the piece. The spinning on their chair is slow and it tends to be broken into four which leads the duet to be facing one the audience, away from the audience or either side. The movements are less smooth and they tend to go out of sync more.
The third phase reintroduces an instrumental musical tone. The third performer is done by a single performer whose choreography is largely similar to the first phase. The solo performer also tends to take more space and keeps moving around the...
