For the protagonist Charles Foster Kane, a good life is a life of fame and fortune, and being liked by many. He lives for the purpose of pleasing others, so that they will like him, and giv him their attention. This lifestyle of his causes him to deviate from true happiness. Welles is able to show that being powerful and rich is futile if one strives for likeability alone. Striving for greatness is not just getting attention but being truly fulfilled in what you do and gaining contentment with what you have inside. The movie begins in Kane’s childhood, in the place where he grew up. His life is forever changed when a rich banker Jerry Thompson, adopts Kane as his own, and raises him. Due to this, Kane becomes and adept of trade and investment and eventually becomes the owner of a newspaper company which is New York Inquirer. This career becomes Kane’s passion, and through this, he is able to become successful and influential. He eventually marries a girl, but their marriage does not last. He is accused of having an affair by his wife, who eventually leaves him, and he eventually marries the girl he was having an affair with. These challenges causes Kane’s passion to wane, and so, he hires someone from his competitors who he instructs to make up dramatic headlines. He betrays his friends and as one last desperate attempt to stake his influence, he had a grand palace built for him and his wife.
There are hidden symbolisms in the film, one of which is the following. Kane over and again bombs in his endeavors to control the people of his life, which maybe clarifies his fixation on gathering statues and the presence of statues all through the film, since statues can be effectively controlled.
