Assignment Instructions: Select one of the four (4) works of art from the previous Analysis (Case Study) Resources page to focus on to conduct your first visual analysis. Provide a thoughtful and well developed visual analysis based on the techniques practiced leading up to this assignment. The final product should be a 2-page paper.
Your initial reading is a close examination of the work you've chosen before you read about it. In order to describe what you see, you might consider:
What do you notice first? Why? What do the colors convey? How? How is the space occupied? Is there a foreground and a background (2D) or is the piece sculptural (3D) with mass and volume? Is there an implied shape, such as a triangle, square, or circle, that brings balance to the composition? Are there diagonal lines that make it dynamic?
Next, read the materials provided about the work of art. You are welcome to do additional research on the internet as long as you use reputable websites, such as those from museums and art publications. Go back to your piece and take an even closer look. Think about what you've read and what you see. How does its meaning deepen from additional information the work of art?
Then, consider how the formal elements play into the artist's intention or audience's interpretation of the work. Making connections and observations about form and content are the key to writing a strong analysis. Remember to cite as appropriate. Refer to your Plagiarism Quiz as a refresher.

An analysis of Krzysztof Wodiczko’s “Homeless Vehicle Project.”
Jerry-rigged. Metallic. Spontaneous. Mobile. Proletarian. Loud. These are the words that come into the author’s mind upon seeing Wodiczko’s “Homeless Vehicle Project,” what at first glance seems to be a conglomeration of a trolley, reinforced with grilled metal, outfitted with a flag, warning tape, neatly rolled up a tarpaulin, with two primary silos or spaces for storage in the object’s structure.
Judging from the title given to the object, it seems to be a carrier of goods or essentials of homeless persons. Indeed it looks that way. It has the look of sturdiness, of utility over aesthetic, of durability over fashion. It seems straightforward and nondescript, but some of its features immediately pop out, such as the flag, which is presumably a notice for any vehicles or persons, and the black and yellow warning tape is outfitted in the trim of the object.
Readings and analysis
Sural places the Homeless Vehicle Project in its proper historical context: New York during the 1980s. Reaganomics gained a foothold in the economic processes and policies of the nation. Therefore, social services and welfare were cut down, affordable housing was suspended, institutional mental care was disregarded, and the budget was transferred by the policymakers from these critical development areas to the “creation of a city for the rich” (Sural 2017).
Sural narrates the creation of the Homeless Vehicle Project—maker Wodiczko, a Canadian was a lecturer in a university in New York and bore first-hand witness to the hardships and adversities suffered by the classes and groups of people who could not afford lush, comfortable, and expensive homes in the countryside or chic and modern flats or townhouses in high-cost neighborhoods. Sural cites Wodiczko as the latter dubs the Homeless Vehicle Project, a creation of “interrogative design,” or “scandalizing functionalism” (Sural 2017).
