On 13th March, a few of my classmates and I volunteered at Poverello House (shelter for the homeless) in Fresno, California. The shelter began in 1973 to help people stuck in the verge of poverty and despair. The extreme levels of desperation for the adopted groups of people should have pushed them to homelessness. The population at Poverello house includes people like widows, orphans, and individuals battling and seeking to drop drug and substance abuse. Having the history of one of the most prominent founders (Mike Mc Garvin) of the organization based on recovery from drug abuse through help by other people reveals that the target population could have been the group. In addition, Mc Garvin decided to thank God by feeding the homeless in the streets, revealing the next target population for the establishment of the shelter.
Although the Poverello House might have distinct principles and standards towards the services provided for the housed community, the delivery might face some distinct challenges. First, the shelter depends on donations from well-wishers and also volunteers who offer to help in the services given to the homeless. Should the two groups decline their services, the house may not have the capacity to continue with operations. On the other hand, the shelter does not have adequate space to accommodate the increasing numbers of homeless people in the city. The founders of the organization intended to help all the homeless people in the city irrespective of age, gender, nationality and race since their core value and mission work towards making their desperate lives better by showing them that there are people concerned about their welfare regardless of the living conditions they battle in the streets.
