Essay #2: Advocacy Research Paper
Due Friday May 1st, 2020
Formatting:
a. MLA heading and page numbers
b. 5-7 double-spaced pages
c. 1-inch margins
d. 12 pt. Times New Roman or Arial font
e. At least five reliable research sources with works cited page.
f. At least two embedded media elements (picture, video, hyperlink, etc.). These count on top of your four research sources. These elements cannot take up more than a 2X3 inch space (each).
Prompt:
Using what you’ve learned about advocacy and activism, you will write an essay 5-7 pages in length that convinces an audience to support a group or an organization that is important to you. You will use at least five research sources to support your argument, one of which will be the organization’s website. The other three sources can help prove your claim that this organization is worthy of support. You will be able to reuse all these sources in the research project, so do a good job picking them out.
It would be a smart move to write about an organization that is connected to a larger cause you want to focus on for your research project, but you don’t have to. For instance, Habitat for Humanity works on affordable housing, which could connect you to the larger issue of homelessness or poverty. You might have multiple causes and organizations that are important to you, however, and you can use this opportunity to explore something else if you like.
Essay Breakdown:
A. Introduction (any order)—
a. Introduce the topic with an interesting fact, story, or statistic. Catch your reader’s attention with something unforgettable.
b. Offer commentary on the fact, story, or statistic. Why is your fact, story, or statistic important?
c. Give background information that the audience may need to understand the issue. For instance, are you using any specialized vocabulary a general audience may not know? Define it here.
d. Thesis (claim plus warrants)
B. Body Paragraphs—balance your logos/research with pathos. Organize your paragraphs so that the most important information comes first and last. Put the weaker arguments in the middle. Your research goes here. Use it strategically, and never use research in isolation. You should ALWAYS connect your research to your thesis with commentary. For instance, if you use a particular statistic, comment on why that statistic is important and connect it to the larger picture. This section is where you put all the pertinent information you found on your organization, like current projects, financial responsibility, membership requirements, etc.
C. Conclusion (Significance)—
a. Do NOT restate your introduction
b. Take this opportunity to explain how the audience can help support the organization.
c. Explain to the audience what the implications are for supporting the cause or not supporting the cause. Consider whether it would be more effective, rhetorically, to focus on the positive consequences or the negative ones.
SPECIAL NOTE ON RESEARCH:
It is irresponsible and unethical to use other people’s information without documenting it properly. Your grade will suffer greatly (automatic “C” or lower) if you do not include in-text citations (parenthetical citations) as well as a works cited page.
