Post-structuralism is a concept used to describe various philosophical and critical approaches to studying literature, culture, and language. The idea was developed in the late 1960s and 1970s. It is a reaction against structuralism, a term used to describe a method of studying and analysing culture and literature by looking for patterns and structures in how language is used (Crick, 2016). Politics is the practice and theory involving influencing others on an individual level. It entails making decisions that apply to groups of people as well as achieving and exercising governance positions and organised control over human groups, particularly a state. Michel Foucault is one of the significant philosophers of the 20th century. He is widely recognised as the father of post-structuralism. Foucault's work is defined by its analysis of power relations, knowledge, and subjectivity.
Post-structuralism is an intellectual movement that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is often seen as a reaction to structuralism, a more rigid, linear form of thinking that seeks to explain the structure of language, culture, and society. At the heart of Foucault's contribution to post-structuralism is his analysis of power. He described power as a fluid and complex system of a link between persons and groups rather than a monolithic organisation wielded by an individual or group. He also viewed power as a form of knowledge. It is not simply a force imposed on people but a way of knowing and understanding the world that shapes people's behaviour and beliefs. Foucault's concept of power also led to a rethinking of the traditional subject-object dichotomy. He stated that power is not imposed on people by external aspects but by a dynamic link where individuals and external forces dictate and are impacted by each other (Masquelier, 2019). This idea has helped to move post-structuralism away from the traditional view of power as an oppressive force and toward a more nuanced understanding of it as a complex system of relationships.
Foucault's focus on power relations also influenced him to examine the role of knowledge in society. He argued that knowledge is a neutral inquiry tool and a form of power. It is used to control and shape individuals and society and can be used for both good and bad aspects. Foucault's work on subjectivity has been highly influential in post-structuralism.
