Your task is to consider how the SDGs could be incorporated into your discipline.
You can interpret ‘discipline’ broadly.
You might like to consider how the SDGs could improve your current learning at University. For example, Geography is historically a white discipline, how could we enhance the diversity of our student and staff body? Why would that be valuable? What challenges might we face and how could we overcome them? What lessons might we learn that could be shared with others?
Or, you might like to consider the professional world of your ‘discipline’. Should there be more female engineers? What is the gender balance of engineers, and why is that? What could be done and why? What challenges might you face?
Do you need to start earlier and consider SDGs within school learning?
Consider your scale. You can narrow down the focus to consider, for example, a specific policy, or work place, or environment.
Consider your SDGs. You could focus on one, or a few, or you could consider the whole ‘SDG project’.
Can you apply examples? Is there some really fantastic work happening in one discipline that you think should be applied to your discipline?
Whatever your approach, justify why it is important. The ‘so what’ question. Why does this matter for sustainable development?
The marking criteria for this task is attached. For this assessment you need to:
explain your chosen ‘problem’ in your discipline. Justify why it is a problem, and why it matters for sustainability, drawing on what you have learnt from the unit to support your argument.
outline your proposed solution to rectify this issue, justify why you think it will be effective, taking into consideration any potential challenges your solution might encounter and if it could be scaled up, or rolled out
You can present your work in a format that is appropriate to the audience.
If you are advising your academics you may like to present a policy, or briefing document. If you are advising a professional body perhaps you would like to write a letter outlining your concerns and how you think they could be addressed. You might like to present something more practical such as a teaching tool, or network. Ensure that your writing tone suits your format: a policy document or report would be formal and written in the third person (‘it is suggested that’, and so forth), a teaching tool may need to be more informal. Whatever your chosen format your writing needs to be accessible to a lay audience, explain your terms and avoid jargon.
Your finished task should be no more than 1500 words in length (excluding tables and references), and should be fully referenced using a recognised referencing system of your choice. You may, if you wish, use graphs, statistics, or maps, where appropriate, to illustrate your argument..

The world continues to experience economic, social, political and environmental changes. Some changes have contributed positively to the global political economy, while others have been adverse. Major international systems disruptions, such as financial crashes, environmental degradation, and public health emergencies, have affected nations. The realm of global political economy is large as it defines the principles and processes used by individuals, communities, governments, and organizations to formulate rules and policies. Thus, SDGs can be integrated into the international political economy to provide a framework through which governments and other institutions respond to existing and anticipated changes. This essay outlines how SDGs can be incorporated into the international political economy to address the problem of rising inequality between poor and wealthier countries.
Addressing inequalities through SDGs
International political economy discipline addresses the inequality gap between the rich and wealthier countries, which continues to rise despite positive economic and technological advancement. However, the problem has attracted little attention in the international political economy due to longstanding national interests in the distribution of global resources aided by the structure of the worldwide economy (Cohen, 2019). Addressing global inequality will require restructuring the global hierarchies and bridging the global divisions between international policymakers. Un SDGs provide a fair background where nations feel represented. The sustainable development goals address issues that focus on people and the process of implementing a more equitable political, social, and environmental social world. According to SDG 10, UN members are committed to reducing inequality. The SDG targets achieving 40% income growth for the bottom population, empowering and promoting social, economic, and political inclusion and reducing inequality outcomes by removing discriminatory laws, practices and policies. SDG 4 outlines a commitment to quality education for all without discrimination (Xu et al., 2021). The target is equitable, quality, free primary and secondary education for better learning outcomes. What needs to happen, therefore, to address the rising global inequality is applying the frameworks of SDGs to develop new and inclusive social, economic and political laws and policies that are fair for all nations through syllabus change.
The current syllabus addresses inequalities but fails to offer concrete solutions. Poor and developing countries continue to feel the debt burden more than developed countries. The international monetary policies are punitive for less developed economies, and therefore, by applying SDG 10, lending terms can be reviewed to reduce the debt burden on poor countries (Xu et al., 2021). Global resources should also be distributed to support education for all, which should be felt at the grassroots.
