What is Domestic Abuse?
As defined by Womensaid.org.uk, domestic abuse is a gendered crime wherein incident, or pattern of incidents arose from control, coercion, threatening, degrading, and violent behavior of the partner or ex-partner, or even by a family member. This can include coercive control, psychological/emotional abuse, physical/sexual abuse, financial/economic abuse, digital abuse, and harassment, and stalking.
This crime is deeply rooted due to the societal inequality among men and women and is very common with women as victims, perpetrated by men. Domestic abuse happens to any woman regardless of their ethnicity, race, religion, class, or sexuality. Domestic violence can lead to families and children suffering from it’s long-term and shattering effects. It can take various forms that occur in a broad spectrum of domestic environments(, n.d.).
An increasing trend of domestic abuse in the UK during the lockdown
The pandemic of coronavirus is an increasing concern for domestic abuse victims. People are required to stay at home as a preventive measure to the rising case of COVID19. This, however, could have a severe effect on victims of domestic abuse, as this would lead to greater exposure to those who perpetrate such crime.
The preventive measures, as well as the emergency response undertaken to contain the outbreak, may aggravate and escalate domestic abuse.
According to the domestic abuse commissioner for England and Wales, the calls to the hotline concerning national abuse have risen by 65% over the last week of March. As shown by data from the National Police chief’s Council, the overall crime rate in the UK has decreased. However, there was a 25% increase in calls to the hotline of the National Domestic Abuse during the first two weeks of lockdown, which has increased to 49% after three weeks (Lawrie & Butcher, 2020).
Why does domestic violence happen?
Domestic violence and abuse happen due to the intention of gaining and maintaining control and power over one’s partner. Perpetrators often believe that they are given the right to have control over their partners and restrict them with whatever activity or freedom that the abuser wants. The abuser tends to enjoy the feeling of power as they assumed that their own needs and emotions should be the main priority in a relationship. Through abusive strategies, they break down the equality in a relationship to make their partner realize that they are not worthy of respect and are less valuable in the relationship (, n.d.).
