Operations management (OM) is concerned about how the business leader utilizes resources, such as the machines, to competently create excellent products that will satisfy the demands of the customers. Other resources include the individuals who are responsible for imparting their knowledge to the operations such as the staff, the company partners, and customers. Despite the benefits of having an OM, handling a small, medium, or large-sized company comes with difficulties due to varying resources and the increase in job demands. In turn, these issues affect the manufacturing process of the business (Slack, Chambers, & Johnson, 2010). This paper aims to discuss one of the OM and manufacturing issues influenced by human behavior.
The problems that are necessary to be addressed in OM are poor work ethics and unethical behavior of some employees. Work ethic is expressed as a belief in moral good guided by a set of values that are primarily reflected in an individual’s aspirations to achieve the goals of the organization CITATION Mer28 \l 13321 (Merriam Webster, 1828). Unethical behavior is a major element in the demise of successful operations. Examples of these include what happened in Enron and Tyco and other firms on Wall Street. In a workplace where there are different groups, it is expected that individuals who work in that environment have a massive gap in personalities and beliefs. These factors contribute to the existing conflicts, especially between departments. As mentioned earlier, work ethic is also largely influenced by personal and organizational or departmental goals. For instance, five departments have unique organizational functions. These are the Marketing and Sales, Finance and Accounting, Human Resource and Management, and Information Technology Departments. The goals of these departments are planning and processing, budgeting, and capital approval processes, payroll and recruitment processes, and systems review, respectively. The disparities in the goals of each department will result in conflicts in manufacturing due to their distinct priorities (Slack, Chambers, & Johnson, 2010).
