Current Situation:
The first draft and the structure have been finished by myself already, and the related sources have been attached as well. Now, the first draft needs to be written into a final version and expanded with other sources/academic journals.
Requirement:
• Your visual essay should consist of 8 -12 images you have collated and 500-700 words of your own text.
• These images should show different aspects of the topics you are looking at, and you should try to present these images to “tell the story” of your topic. Images should relate to each other and show different sides of the story you are telling.
• Use the reading “Youth” by Elizabeth Rouse. Please use one or two quotes from the relevant reading to support your discussion. create a commentary on the images you have chosen.
Submission:
One Word document. Keep the file size of your visual essay document to a minimum
You may want to structure your visual essay in this way:
Short introduction: Which brief are you following? What is the focus of your visual essay (ie which subculture, or which example of stereotypes). This is a good place to include a quote which helps to define stereotypes or subcultures.
Pictures: 2 or 3 at a time, coupled with writing about the images to explain the story you are telling.
Please REFERENCE your images, either under each image or in a list at the end. Where is it from? Who created it? What year is it from?
Finish with a small conclusion summing up your points.
About Referencing:
You must reference information in your essay using the Harvard Referencing System
Direct quotations should appear in inverted commas “…” and be followed by (author, year of publication, page number)
So for example: (Fiske, 1989, p. 2) – this kind of referencing is called “In-text citations.”
Paraphrasing works similarly – if you are using someone else’s ideas and information but not their exact words you still need to make note of where these ideas/information came from – so just put the author’s surname and the year of publication in brackets after you have paraphrased them – eg (Fiske, 1989).
Please note that in-text citations are counted as part of the over-all word count.
The Bibliography
You must provide a bibliography – this is a list of sources you have looked at for ideas and information for your essay.
All the recommended readings consulted throughout your research should be listed.
It’s ok if there’s only one source though for an essay of this length, though!
Please note that the bibliography is not part of the over-all word count.
Each source should be listed in alphabetical order by author surname, followed by year of publication, title of the source (in Italics), and location and name of publisher.
Finally here is an example bibliography to help you:

Retro Heritage is Hip with China's Fashionista Generation Zs
——A Contemporary Chinese Subculture-744496332977
My visual essay is about subculture, and the theme is retro Chinese culture among the contemporary Generation Zs.
Generation Z has grown up in a digital era and access various information sources about China's history and Chinese culture. The retro Chinese culture among Generation Z integrates some elements of traditional Chinese culture. "Others have tried to explain youth subcultures, not in terms of mindless consumption but in terms of genuine style innovation, and the generation of styles which ''say'' something about the social and economic conditions in which those young people live" (Rouse, 199, p. 287). The new subculture among China's youth is associated with nostalgia and retro, which means and reflects the idea of "The overthrowing tide that excels the old".
Chinese Millenials are more open to sharing their heritage and getting knowledge of Chinese culture and history, and the retro culture reflects this. In the past anti-intellectual Cultural Revolution was associated with attacks on China's cultural heritage. Now the Chinese youth seek more knowledge and information about the past and project an image of a better future (Duveau and Dumenil, 2018). Figure 1 on students celebrating China’s Youth Day in Wuhan 2010 highlights growing optimism about the country’s future where there is nostalgia for the past and hope for a better future. Chinese Gen Zs embrace the past and hope for a better future. In any case, there has been growing interest in Chinese products. For instance, figures 2 and 3 focus on the Forbidden City and link the images to Chinese architecture incorporated into fashion and branded products. The retro culture rekindles memories and information on ancient Chinese culture where products incorporate some elements of the past.
On various online platforms, millenials share different artworks that reflect Chinese heritage elements that have influenced the retro culture, including folk music and games. Figure 4 shows one s...
