Cause and Effect of Unemployment
Unemployment occurs when someone who is able and willing to work fails to secure a paid job. High unemployment rates affect individuals, the state, and the economy at large. It is difficult to lead a normal life without a job and proper finances. Some of the causes of unemployment include workplace discrimination, the advancement of technology replacing manpower, and economic recession leading to the closure of my businesses. The unemployment rates lead to loss of income, poor living conditions, stress, and inefficient mental health.
Causes of Unemployment
Technological advancements replace human resources with systems, raising the unemployment rate. The introduction of labor-saving machines makes industries get rid of workers. Machines tend to perform a large amount of work at a minimal period, eliminating workers in the employment sector. Although the advancements have led to increased demand and pay for highly skilled workers with the knowledge of using machines, a higher number of low-skilled employees lose their positions. Therefore, technological advancement increases unemployment rates through decreasing demand for human resources labor.[Mustafa Emre Civelek and Çağrı Pehlivanoğlu. "Technological unemployment anxiety scale development." (2020).]
Discrimination arising from factors such as age, social class, religion, and gender in workplaces causes unemployment. Discrimination against individuals from specific religious groups limits employment due to their beliefs. For instance, Siddique reports on the high unemployment rate of Muslims in countries such as Britain due to religious and cultural practices. Another example is the persistently low unemployment rate among the Black community in the US, which presents a wide unemployment gap between the Whites and the African American communities. Thus, social-cultural attitudes towards a certain group of people have contributed to low unemployment among some communities.[Haroon Siddique, “Muslims' High Unemployment Rate 'Not Due to Cultural and Religious Practices',” The Guardian (Guardian News and Media, July 17, 2022),] [Jonnelle Marte, “Gap in U.S. Black and White Unemployment Rates Is Widest in Five Years,” Reuters (Thomson Reuters, July 2, 2020.]
