The employees at United Airlines rebelled against the new bonus system because it would alienate most of them from being compensated for their performance and contribution to the organization's success. As the New York Times indicated, the new bonus system would only compensate 1,361 employees, while the old bonus system has rewarded over 24,000 employees. As such, more employees would not be compensated under the new bonus system when the company achieves its operational performance goals, yet they will have contributed to this achievement. As one employee noted in the online petition, the new bonus system was unjust and unfair because it would only compensate employees with perfect attendance. Yet, life sometimes gets in the way of perfect attendance, but employees still achieve their performance targets. This indicates that for it to motivate employees effectively, compensation programs should be fair and just in the eyes of employees.[.
