How does Jasper Johns use this image to showcase the lack of appreciation for aesthetic qualities of images?
The above question is quite interesting because while looking at Jasper’s masterpiece, one could be led to think that it is simply normal. However, this would essentially be failing to appreciate the image's aesthetic qualities in the same way that Jasper envisioned. While looking at the American flag, one does not notice anything special other than what it represents. So, what people associate the flag with is strictly symbolic. However, what if people can go beyond the symbolic bit of things and appreciate the work of art that is the American flag? This question formed Jasper’s main idea while sharing this masterpiece.
Art is a big part of the human experience. For someone to truly appreciate art, there ought to be an interplay between stimuli and an aspect like context. However, in the world today, art has been reduced to symbolism. It is only a few people who can sit through an art fair while appreciating what the different pieces represent.
