Was the use of military force justified in crushing strikers?
The military force was not justified in crushing strikers as the lives of US citizens were not under imminent threat, since the military is tasked with protecting the country and maintaining peace and tranquility. Strikers were not a threat to the stability of a country even as they may cause social turmoil, and the military has mostly been called to take up arms when there are external threats and they are justified to engage in wars and violence as a way to protect Americans. After the end of the Civil War, the use of slave labor and convict laborers was a way to reduce the cost of labor and reducing reliance on free laborers who were unionized. Some of the soldiers sympathized with the strikers, while some of the richest industrialists bought weapons and financed the police who served as an antistrike force in Chicago. The Northern railroad industry and industrialists did use U.S. troops to quell strikes and combined with other tactics to limit workers joining unions, it was challenging for the worker...
