Choose two objects in the current chapters in your textbook that are thematically related (landscapes, portraits, religious subjects, historical monuments, etc.).
Write an essay of at least 450 words using 12 point font and double-spaced text) comparing the formal treatment and iconography of each work. Be sure to identify each object by indicating the artist, title, and date of production. Your essay should address how similarities and differences contribute to your understanding of each work’s meaning or artistic significance. You should analyze these points: stylistic choices (e.g., abstract, naturalistic, idealistic, realistic), function or symbolism of the pieces (What were they used for? Do they communicate a message? Are they sacred or secular works of art), cultural context (e.g., how might the way of life at the time and place the pieces were created affected their function and style? Do historical events relate to the image or story depicted?). In addition, I expect you to refer to the course readings, including the primary readings I uploaded to BlackBoard, in the essays. You must cite at least one source that is not our text book.
Use Chicago-Turabian style notation for any sources that you need to document as references in footnotes. Double-space your text and list your name and the date in the header on the first page. In almost all cases, you should italicize the title of a work of art. Consult the Chicago-Turabian sample essay I provided you for more information concerning formatting. Include at least two illustrations.

Throughout history, the world has witnessed the names of various talented individuals mentioned in accolades previously reserved for modernists. Among those included are Frank Owen Gehry and Louise Nevelson. Owing to the uniqueness of the works by the two artists, this essay seeks to analyze the Guggenheim Museum by Gehry, and the Sky Cathedral by Louise Nevelson. Frank Gehry designed the Guggenheim Museum, which was established in 1997 and was opened to the public on October the same year. The Sky Cathedral-Moon Garden Plus One was produced by Louise Nevelson between 1957 and 1960.
With regards to iconography, both works have particularly distinctive features that are symbolic. For example, in Nevelson’s work, the artist uses fragments of random objects of architecture and furniture, which symbolize the unappreciated objects of civilization, and even the people who have been long forgotten. The use of the color black in her piece also symbolizes the twilight, which she considered to be a transformation process, whereby things begin to change in their appearance. Similarly, specific features in Gehry’s design are symbolic. The building’s design is uniquely built and incomparable to previous architectures. The artist incorporates curvilinear masses in the design and stresses on angularity and flat planes. These features symbolize Gehry’s ability to incorporate the disciplines of history and art to architecture and new technology. The design of the building also symbolizes the artist’s distinction from deconstructivism. Having refused to be associated with deconstructivism, Gehry’s incorporation of flat planes and angles symbolizes his distinction from the common techniques used by other architects during the time.
