The first petroleum Well in history was the Oil Well technology that Edwin Drake discovered in 1859. After its invention, petroleum was observed to power the industrial world relatively quickly in various forms, including jet turbines, power plants, and internal combustion engines. Drake applied this technology to address the problem of feasibility of the oil enterprise for the Pennsylvania rock oil company, where oil had been extracted from underground seepages for medicinal purposes. He demonstrated that similar drilling techniques could be used to retrieve oil from the earth's surface near Oil Creek (Bissell, 2016). He then continued building a location where he could dig more oil and salt wells.
