The purpose of this assignment is for students to collect information about the ways that their assigned historically underrepresented group is portrayed by the popular media. The student will identify three to four popular cultural portrayals of your assigned group. In 1,500–2,000 words, students will provide the images, describe the portrayals, and answer the following questions: What are the overt and covert messages being displayed about your selected group? How do these messages support a socially constructed view of the selected social group? What was the role of essentialism, bias, and power in the portrayals? In addition to the 1,500–2,000 words, students will provide an APA-formatted reference list.
For your Individual PPO Assignment, you will be searching for popular cultural portrayals of the underrepresented group you are studying. The purpose of this assignment is to understand how people absorb and ascribe to racial stereotypes. Media (social and otherwise) construct images and stories that reinforce societies belief systems about historically marginalized groups.

Historically, there have been groups that have experienced marginalization and bias in one way or another. The main ways of marginalization have been economic and political, which in one way or the other, impacts the social aspect. Presently, the society has gained a realistic glimpse into the lives of the women of color. Women have always been perceived to be products of men’s success. Worse still, is when it comes to the perception of women of color. Women of color tend to be negatively stereotyped leading to the significant obliteration of their dreams and aspirations. Places of work have become intolerable and horrendous for this part of the population owing to the perceptions held about them by the society. Great strides have been made in the enhancement of their status. Nonetheless, reports indicate that stereotypes have not been efficiently tackled thus constricting substantial improvement of their status. This paper essentially provides an expansive discussion of the pop culture portrayals of women of color among other things.
In pop culture, the women of color are represented as being dependent on men. This is probably an offshoot of the traditional assumption and the roles of men and women, where men were the breadwinners and hence the providers while women were the home keepers. It is assumed that their positions are brought about by the achievements of their husbands and not because of their working towards that particular position. This implies that for them to clinch any particular position the assistance of a man is needed (PayPerVids, 2017). For instance, people assumed that Michelle Obama’s celebrity status could simply be attributed to her husband’s position.
While it might be true, it is not necessarily the main reason. The status came through and found her already having an identity of her own, rather than the vice versa. Many chose to take this simplistic view even though her speeches had consistently proved that she is not a clueless woman. This is a misguided and misconstrued perception and should be rejected because it disregards the effort these women put towards the accomplishment of their dreams and goals. Furthermore, it just works against the progress made by women of color in their attempts to step out of the cover of men and onto their own.
Pop culture also portrays women of color as having inferior intelligence. Firms have played a big role in promoting this notion as they incessantly depict women of color as poor decision makers who can only be in lower class occupations (PayPerVids, 2017). Fortunately, people like Michelle Obama have aided in showing that this is just a misplaced perception considering she has achieved greatness in her academic and career life. Other examples, such as Oprah Winfrey, also have become the embodiment of resilience and ability beyond just the color of one’s skin. Women of power are not poorly endowed as the popular culture would lead many to believe. As a civilized society, it is pertinent to get rid of this ill notion and focus on providing these individuals with opportunities as their serial input cannot be ignored.
