Victimization of Aboriginal People of Canada
From the past, the issue of race and ethnicity has changed across different cultures, and it is becoming more connected to familial and ancestral ties. The Canadian society can be described as a complex network among ethnic groups that occupies unequal political, economic, and social positions. Notably, within this complexity, three significant axes of ethnic differences can be identified. The first is the association between indigenous and non-indigenous groups of people. Second is the relationship between French English and the colonizing groups. Lastly is the relationship between descendants and immigrants. All these distinctions are not only significant in private experiences but also social issues like immigration policies, indigenous rights, multiculturalism, and linguistic rights. The paper discusses the victimization of aboriginal people of Canada, how to solve the problem, and a theoretical explanation of the problem.
Victimization Among the Aboriginal People of Canada
Under-reporting cases of victimization, especially in domestic violence, are a major concern for the Aboriginal people of Canada. High rates of victimization for aboriginal people are related to risk factors like homelessness, poor mental health, child maltreatment, and drugs. Additionally, the Aboriginal people of Canada are at high risk of victimized with personal and violent crimes and are negatively involved and represented in the criminal justice system. According to Scrim (2014), there is a relationship between social and demographic factors towards victimization of Aboriginal individuals. Some of these factors include high rates of unemployment, consumption of alcohol, family issues.
The aboriginals living in Canada can be considered to be economically and socially disadvantaged population. In the last fifty years, the rate of deaths from acute diseases has declined among Aboriginals. However, their life expectancy is still lower than other ethnic groups in Canada (Anand et al., .2001). Higher rates of victimization among Aboriginal women cannot be entirely be explained by increased risks of other victimization factors. For example, Aboriginals women are more likely to experience sexual and physical maltreatment as compared non – Aboriginal groups in Canada (Boyce, 2016). Additionally, Aboriginals women in Canada experience violence three times high compared to other women. The violence is brutal when compared to the general population.
In the criminal justice system, the aboriginals are more likely to be victims of violent crimes than other groups in Canada. For example, the aboriginals are overrepresented as being offenders charged with police-reported cases. Additionally, their crime rates are higher than other crime rates of the rest of the individuals in Canada. Notably, when the indigenous groups report incidents of violence and the charges laid, there is a high likelihood to be dismissed for non-guilty outcomes (Tomm 2013).
