SHORT PAPER
Introduction
As the builders of the community, it is very important for one to understand the culture. No matter where people live, everyone is working to establish strong relationships with different people. These people have different cultures. A culture is a group of people who share common experiences that shape the way they understand the world today. It is very important to understand everyone's culture because culture influences hope, humor, values, fears, and loyalty. The world has become increasingly diverse and has people from different religions, economic groups, and other cultural groups. Communication is very important especially for people who come from different cultures. Interviewing a person who comes from different culture requires one to understand the stereotypes, values, and perceptions of the interviewee. Communication with people from different cultures can enrich one's life, both personally and professionally.
I had a chance to interact with a person from Kenya. To learn how to have a good relationship with the interviewee, I had to learn to communicate both verbally and non-verbally. I also did some research before conducting the interview so that I would have knowledge about how I was supposed to communicate with the individual and share some opinions. During the interview, I learned that Kenya was a colony of the United Kingdom. The interviewee also asserted that the country is a regional hub for trade and finance in East Africa because of its geographic location. Kenya is a popular country in the world because it produces some stunning and famous long-distance runners. Kenyan people are group-oriented. The social life of the country is connected with hospitality, companionship, and kindness. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why people from the United States and other countries would like to visit there more and more. I also learned that in Kenya children are brought up by the community and society at large. As a result, this has made it easy for people to develop feelings of concern towards other people. Greetings are also important among the Kenyan people. The staple meal in Kenya is the “Ugali” and it is made from millet, sorghum, and maize. Kenya has more than sixty spoken languages but English and Kiswahili are the official languages. The main economic activity in Kenya is farming. Other activities include fishing and trade. Life in the United States is very high. For example I have to spend 32.8 times more oil, I have to spend 199.4 times more in medical care and there is a high probability that one is likely to be in prison.
My second respondent was a citizen of the United States. I learned that America is a very interesting country. The United States is a very diverse country and the general ways of respecting the culture of everyone is communicating and expressing one's ideas. Customs vary from families and regions in America. In America, people view the freedom to access information and speech as a right. This is different from China where information is filtered before it is exposed to the public. Cities in China are densely populated which is different from the United States.
