Overview
The first step in being cultural aware is to examine the personal cultural influences that have shaped our world view.  When our own preference, bias and unconscious stereotypes are identified we are more open to the same influences in others.
Identity and meaning are part of every human life in all world cultures. Meaning is generated from our sense of identity and from the information we receive. Our cultures give us messages about desirable identities (who we are, who we seek to be, and how we relate to others) and sources of meaning (what matters and why). Since our cultures give us different ideas about identity and meaning, our way of pursuing our goals can at times seem in conflict.
Our cultures exist within larger structures called 'worldviews'. In her book In Search of Human Nature, Mary Clark (2002) defines worldviews as "beliefs and assumptions by which an individual makes sense of experiences that are hidden deep within the language and traditions of the surrounding society."  These worldviews are the shared values and assumptions on which rest the customs, norms, and institutions of any particular society. Clark tells us that these worldviews are tacitly communicated by "origin myths, narrative stories, linguistic metaphors, and cautionary tales", and that they "set the ground rules for shared cultural meaning."Worldviews shape, or help determine, values. Values change across cultures, since they have to do with what we consider most important, and the ways we see our relationships, the world, and ourselves. Some of the values that vary across cultures include:• Power -- social status, prestige, control over others and resources• Achievement -- success through competence according to social standards• Hedonism -- pleasure of sensuous gratification for self• Stimulation -- excitement, novelty, change in life• Self-direction -- independent thought and action - choice, creativity, exploring goals• Universalism -- understanding, appreciation, tolerance, and protection for the welfare of people and nature• Benevolence -- preservation and enhancement of the welfare of members of in-groups• Tradition -- respect, commitment, and acceptance of ideas from a person's culture and religion• Conformity -- restraint of actions, inclinations, and impulses likely to upset or harm others• Security -- safety, harmony, and stability of society, relationships, and self.

A reflective essay incites the writer to reflect on topics from the framework of personal experience. Reflective essays must have a clearly defined focus with a consistent point of view. They should provide background information and include narrative elements such as plot, characters, setting and conflict. Reflective essays should present events in a clear format such as chronologically. Although they differ from other essays in their content, they follow the same basic format.
What is a Cultural Narrative
Whether you write about another culture or your own, the key to writing an effective cultural narrative is to focus on a single aspect of the culture. Your descriptive essay should have a central idea that guides the content and provides description -- or specific details -- about the topic. The narrative should also include analysis and reflection in which you think about the content, draw connections and come to conclusions.
ContentThe content of your essay can address various aspects of culture, including traditions, family, holidays, religious and spiritual practices, gender roles, art, music, methods of communication and oral history. If you're writing about a particular aspect of culture in the U.S., California State University in Fresno suggests writing about topics such as the civil rights movement, racism and discrimination, blues and gospel music or Mexican immigration. Once you have selected a topic, you can compose a thesis statement for your essay.
