The economic situation in the United States is not the same as it was some years back. In the articles Mike Bloomberg: Fixing Inequality is my Priority and in The Economy is Not as Good as it Looks, by Michael Bloomberg and Steven Rattner respectively, the authors talk about this issue and how the Trump government has contributed to this situation. This paper therefore, aims to compare these two opinion articles in relation to their main claims, ground, and their use of logos, ethos, pathos and kairos to appeal to their audiences.
In Rattner’s article The Economy Is Not as Good as It Looks, the author’s main claim is that the economy of the United States has been wrongly perceived to be solid under the Trump administration yet in real sense, all indicators point to a wavering economy. Concerning the considerable expansion seen, Rattner notes that Trump has contributed very little to it (Rattner, 2020). Evidently, the intended audience in this case is the republicans who still believe that Trump has made any major contributions to the economic growth in the U.S. In Bloomberg’s Fixing Inequality is My Priority, the article makes the main claim that inequalities in the economy can be fixed through increasing the taxes for the rich people. On this, Bloomberg points out that only the rich people in the U.S enjoy the greater benefits of the economy and thus, they should be taxed more for there to be equality. From this, the author seems to target both the republicans and democrats since he believes better results can be obtained through working with both parties.
Concerning the grounds and warrants, Rattner bases his claim on the fact that much of the economic expansion in the country is because of Obama’s work and not Trump as the republicans would want people to believe. To support this, he gives an example of jobs and unemployment situation during the Obama and Trump eras. In Obama’s presidency, at least 227000 jobs were created every month and there was a 2percent drop in the unemployment rate. During Trump’s time however, only 191000 jobs are created monthly while the rate of unemployment has dropped by 1.2 percent (Rattner, 2020). Based on these facts, the article concludes that most of the work that Trump is perceived to have done, is actually an extension of the works of former president Obama. Therefore, the continued expansion is due to Obama’s work and little to do with Trump. Mike Bloomberg on his part supports his claim by stating that the tax code in the US focuses on imposing taxes for stocks and bonds rather than increasing taxation for income from work.
