Riley Snorton and Jin Haritaworn article reveals a transnational viewpoint on systemic violence committed against trans people of color. The authors infer that the concept of necro politics formulated by postcolonial theorist Achille Mbembe accurately reflects the situations and existence of trans of color (Snorton & Haritaworn, 2013). The death of such minority groups strengthens the value of diverse projects like anti-immigration, inner-city gentrification, and white community formation or transformation. In this response paper, the focus is to identify the main arguments or questions raised, the theoretical stakes of claims, and interventions aimed by scholars.
In the article, the authors' major claim lie on the life of trans people of color. They argue that the death of such individuals is a raw material for trans rights movements that white trans activists dominate (Snorton & Haritaworn, 2013). Snorton and Haritaworn claim that trans people are disregarded in their lives but become useful in their afterlife through social movements. According to the authors, trans people of color are, "Immobilized in life and barred from spaces meant for whites.” (Snorton & Haritaworn, 2013, 74). Such means instead of being a site of memory justice and human recuperation, the necropolitical narrative is an extractive approach that uses the afterlife to reinscribe the same forces of domination that activists claim to work against.
