The Southern Strategy
The “southern strategy” was basically a Republican Party political strategy of trying to win the southern Democratic Party dominated voter region by just appealing to racism against African Americans. Following the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court declaring that all state-imposed school segregation laws were unconstitutional in 1954, it unexpectedly managed to have a significant impact on U.S. politics compared to the one it was supposed to have in school desegregation (Curtis-Olsen, 2018). Taking advantage of the situation, the Republican Party leaders provided alternatives such as public school desegregation and pushing for conservative appointments in the federal judiciary, all to win the southerners' votes and support.
