This paper will talk about how the representations of LGBTQ women in media influences Social Science. Social Science is about human behavior in its social cultural aspects (Nisbet n.d.).
GLAAD, which is an organization that advocates for queer exposure in media made an annual report on how the LGBTQ women on television needs improvement (Lawson, 2015). According to a 2015-2016 report made by GLAAD, gay men, at 47% make up most of regular recurring LGBT characters. Lesbians only represent 33% of these characters (Reynolds, 2016). Even if there are a lot of characters in shows and movies now compared to 1990s and 2000s, it is still far from being enough to represent the entire LGBTQ community. Those who are familiar with the politics behind it are aware that the racial, sexual and gender diversity of LGBTQ women is not well constituted (Cruz, 2013). Any discussion that is focused on the portrayals of gays and lesbians on television should take into account what commercial demands the medium has.
