The African American population in Florida makes up a significant percentage of the state’s entire population. Among voters, the number of African Americans living in Florida represents 13% of the whole electorate (MacManus, 2018). Over the last few years, the African American population has grown significantly slower than the Asian and Hispanic populations. Still, it has become more diverse, given the influx of people from Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad, and Tobago (MacManus, 2018). A majority of American-born African Americans within the state register as democrats. However, foreign-born African Americas in the state are slightly more partisan diverse. A growing number of young African Americans in the state choose to be Non-Party Affiliates (NPAs) (Taylor, 2019).
This increasing diversity in African Americans within Florida is likely to impact the state’s politics significantly. For many years, Florida has been regarded as a swing state due to its conservative generation of baby boomers (Hochschild, 1998). However, this is bound to change as more raciall...
