The Harm Principle
The "harm principle" is a liberalism concept by John Stuart Mill. The theorist defined it as a concept whereby no party or authority should force anyone to act in any manner they choose as long as their actions do not negatively interfere with other people's free deeds. For instance, a government can only control a person's act or behavior when it causes harm to other concerned parties. An activity that harms or tampers with other persons is offensive. The state, through the government, has a role in regulating or stopping the act from happening and causing further harm to the parties in question. Mill lets people acknowledge that the "harm principle" is a tool to grant them liberty and pose as a barrier to fall victim to oppression and instead enjoy freedom (Weyant & Widger, 2013).
