Importance of Arts to Kindergarteners
Art is an endeavor that encourages creativity, self-expression, and the pursuit of knowledge. Such make art an important part of different subjects such as history, math, and English language arts. Kindergarten children of the age of four years are in the age of development. Therefore, it is important to introduce them to a curriculum that would encourage the development of their cognitive skills. Visual arts, music, drama and play are essential to kindergarten students because they facilitate learning, aids collaboration, enhance discipline and teach communication skills.
Art helps prepare kids for the subject matter they will encounter later in life. It is hard to separate art from other school subjects, but these connections are important for children to learn about at an early age. In math, for example, children can learn geometry as they trace and draw shapes on paper. They use language arts to describe their work and create stories about it. In arts, they also use words to describe actions. Art builds a foundation for understanding the concepts of a subject later on when those concepts are introduced in class (Greene & Sawilowsky, 2018). As kids grow, they begin looking at their world as a place they can shape and leave their mark on it. This is why school is so important because it provides a space where kids can explore themselves through art and discover new ways to use it to express themselves and share their ideas with the world. Music helps kindergarten students learn in different ways. For example, music can make math fun. A substantial number of kindergarten students find math challenging because they learn new concepts. However, when music is added to the equation, the challenging aspect of maths shifts into familiarity and a fun activity. Such enables the students to understand the concepts better. In addition, music can help children develop different skills that are essential in learning. Music helps children to self-regulate, allowing discipline to be acquired and better focus on the task at hand. Music also develops fine motor skills such as holding a pencil correctly and writing in a fluid motion. It also facilitates learning by enhancing the students' capability to acquire language. Music can have a calming effect on kindergarten students when played regularly because it has a rhythmic quality that may relax them. As children experiment with materials, during music sessions, they build skills that would prepare them for future subjects in school and subjects outside of the classroom. Therefore, art should be incorporated into their curriculum to facilitate learning.
Art such as play helps kindergarten kids learn to work together in class and during playtime. In kindergarten, children begin to interact more with their classmates and learn to communicate in new ways, regardless of whether they speak different languages.
