In this discussion we are going to review key social policy initiatives in the US and explore whether elder support is the remit of Government or the social responsibility of families.

Industrialization and modernization of the society have caused an increase in the aging society. This significant growth in the population of the aging population has sparked the demand for social welfare measures, which will protect the well-being of the elderly. The government’s stance in addressing the plight of the elderly has led to the “graying of the budget (Nelson, 85).” There has been a notable resistance to the social welfare of the elderly because of the increasing costs.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ascended into law in 1990. The ADA is, therefore, a civil rights law that prohibits any form of discrimination against individuals who have disabilities in all areas related to public life. This includes jobs, transportation, schools and all private and public places that are a preserve of the public such as the telecommunication, public accommodation and employment (eeoc.gov.).
Age Discrimination Employment Act (ADEA) is enforced by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC. Its mandate is to ensure that the employment needs of forty years or older employees or applicants for positions in a company are catered for and that no form of discrimination on the foundation of age during the discharge, promotion or hiring of these people is witnessed (Feder, 1).
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law guaranteeing some personnel a duration of up to 12 workweeks in hours of unpaid vacation annually without the risk of job loss. It is also a requirement of the FMLA that employers covered by the law, uphold the health benefits for entitled workers just as if they were working (employment.findlaw.com)
Older Americans Act (OAA) is intended to empower the elderly to be independent within their communities and their homes, without the necessary care of the caregivers in nursing homes or being hospitalized. This Act saves the state and the federal government a great deal in the dollars...
