The debate on whether to increase or maintain the minimum wage levels in the United States is intense more than ever before, yet there are disagreements on whether changes are beneficial in the long run. At times, minimum wage has insignificant impact on jobs since employers and businesses can afford such increases as low wage earners only make a small proportion of the workers in America. In the low wage jobs, there is high turnover compared to higher earning jobs, and higher wages may motivate employees, yet businesses owners and employers ignore the costs of training and replacing workers when they argue that low wages are necessary to employ more people. I will highlight the case for raising the federal minimum wage. Keeping the real minimum wages low undermines the wellbeing of low wage earners as their purchasing power deteriorates while they are more likely to be on welfare compared to when they earn higher wages.
Higher minimum wages are associated with increased spending among the low wage earners higher disposable income will improve their economic welling. Even though, opponents of raising the minimum wage argue that it reduces prospects of employment, this is not always the case as many of the big business can afford the higher wages.
