Modern White Collar Workers’ Attachment to Extrinsic Value to their Wage Work
The modern white collar workers attach extrinsic value to their wage work since by introducing division of labor, workers in this class, were alienated from their skillful artistic work processes and the product itself. Their nature of work is depended on the presence of others. By this, it means that the employees are not able to exercise their skill freely, rather they are the watchful eyes of their managers or supervisors. By so doing, they are denied the intrinsic value that is achieved through self-gratification for a job well done. The work is characterized by routine and not a self-assigned skill oriented assignment. The worker does not own the tools of trade or the product in question. He only sells his skills, energy and time, hence resulting into alienation.
What Modern White Collar Workers Value about their Jobs
The white collar workers value the monetary gain they derive from the skills expended. The money factor reduces the fear factor of under-employment or unemployment since if there is no monetary gain, it will be difficult for the worker to “earn a living.” In this case, income security is the motivating factor. Secondly, status plays an instrumental role in worker gratification. Whenever workers receive accolades from co-workers, superiors, friends and friend for their role in the company, they receive the self-esteem the so much desire.
