Ideally, societies make moral societies and this is possible when the society formulates principles of ethics that are expected to have genuinely universal appeal. Cultural relativism is determined as an idea or culture where people have their standards about what is regarded as right and wrong and are not judged; no culture is superior to another. Cultural relativism can allow societies to make moral mistakes because when something is accepted it does not mean that it is morally correct and this contradicts the principles of cultural relativism. Moral mistakes can also be made when minorities in society are forced to accept what the majority perceives as morally correct even when something is against one’s beliefs.

When cultures disagree about morality, they do not support cultural relativism. The whole issue around cultural relativism is cultural tolerance and understanding. The creation of hardline stances based on cultural differences is usually the beginning of ideological differences as well, which form the foundations of morality. When the veil is brought down between these two constructs, it becomes a full-blooded contest between various notions and perceptions about morality based on culture. This is because cultural relativism discourages judging culture and encourages understanding of a culture based on its distinct terms.
