Reflection on Families and Mental Illness
Summary
The social worker's role is critical in developing partnerships with families and providing necessary support to mentally ill patients. The experts who are dealing with the families of individuals who are suffering from chronic mental illness need to take into consideration their uncomfortable feelings. It will help them to develop an effective plan to develop balanced behaviour in the patients. Most often, it has been observed that such patients develop a feeling of shame, anger, and guilt. The negative feelings present in the patients indicate that these individuals may have some signs of family pathology. The critical emotions that exist among the families of these patients have encouraged research on expressed emotion (Jones, 2004). The patient's relative's experiences with the patient can cause a delay in the relief effort and develop negative feelings. Families can often show a feeling of anger towards individuals who are suffering from severe mental illness (Araten‐Bergman & Werner, 2017). These emotions can prove to be a hindrance in the process of providing relief and support to the patients.
Demonstrating Criticism
I believe that family members and relatives of patients who have a chronic mental illness do not feel shame about these individuals. Their primary focus is on providing relevant support to the patient and creates an environment in the house where they can express their emotions. The parents especially remain in continuous consultation with the physician and nurses and follow their guidelines. It helps in controlling the mental health condition of the patients. Most families understand their responsibilities towards these patients and do their best to enhance the mental condition of the patient. The medications can only help the patient to a certain extent. The support which the patient receives from their loved ones develop positive behaviour among the patients towards life. It is essential to understand that mentally ill individuals have their own identity, which should be respected by everyone. Engaging these patients in a healthy and honest conversation develops a positive attitude in them towards life. The family members set the realistic expectation from the patient and work with the physician and social worker to improve their health condition.
